Geekery among the ruins

For those of you wondering how yesterday's tsunami-inducing 9.0 magnitude earthquake stacks up against others, it is officially the 4th-equal largest since 1900. The largest earthquake last century (and on record) was a 9.5 which struck Chile in 1960.

The USGS has a list of the ten largest earthquakes since 1900 here. Last week's 8.1 off Macquarie Island doesn't make the list, though it was the second-largest earthquake of 2004.
