Candidate Survey: Sixth Response

Simon Power (National, Rangitikei) becomes the first sitting MP to respond to the candidate survey. Unfortunately, he hasn't answered in full - but any information is better than none.

If you could ensure the passage of one act on one issue in the next Parliament, what would it be?

Amendments to Employment Relations Act.

What three other electoral candidates or sitting MPs do you think are most similar to you in their political views?

---

Do you support or oppose:

...raising the drinking age?

Support - would consider.

...legalising marijuana (or pharmaceuticals based on it) for medical use?

Oppose

...decriminalising or legalising marijuana for recreational use?

Oppose

...allowing same-sex couples to adopt children?

---

...amending the Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to marry?

---

...allowing voluntary euthanasia or physician assisted suicide?

Oppose

...state funding of integrated schools?

---

...the retention of sedition as a crime in the Crimes Act?

Support

...the retention of blasphemous libel as a crime in the Crimes Act?

---

...further restrictions on hate speech?

---

...the use of indefinite detention without trial for those subject to a security risk certificate?

---

...restoring the death penalty for serious crime?

Oppose

...Georgina Beyer's Human Rights (Gender Identity) Amendment Bill?

---

...Gordon Copeland's New Zealand Bill of Rights (Private Property Rights) Amendment Bill?

Support

...entrenching the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act as supreme law?

---

...New Zealand's participation in the International Criminal Court?

---

...lowering MMP's threshold from the present 5%?

Oppose

Finally,

With the benefit of hindsight, how should the government have handled the Ahmed Zaoui case?

---

As usual, Simon's views are entirely his own, and do not necessarily represent those of his party.

  1. And as usual, Simon doesn't have the guts to express a single personal/honest/contentious view. What a waste of oxygen.

  3. i wonder if maybe he meant to come back and finish it off, forgot that he hadn't, and then sent it with the gaps still in it? i mean some of the questions he hasn't answered are very straight forward...

  4. Sounds like someone else filled it out for him after a very brief conversation. But at least it is a response.

Employment Relations Act!? Polling and my chats with employers show that the ERA is at the bottom of the heap as far as concerns go. ACC and RMA are much higher priorities.

  7. Gutless, and surprising... I thought he was on the liberal side of National?
