It's not the image, it's the actions

Donald Rumsfeld thinks that the current animosity towards the US in much of the world is all down to an image problem, saying that

"I think the US is notably unskilful in our communications and our public diplomacy"

But it's not the image, it's the actions. The US does much of its "public diplomacy" with cruise missiles, electrodes, and armed men kicking in your door in the middle of the night. Given that, is it any wonder that people are pissed off at them?

  1. of course, renaming chips 'freedom fries' because a country takes an opposing diplomatic or political viewpoint to you has nothing to do with it either.

    likewise, spending the better part of the 90s lambasting china and/or other countries for their human rights record, and then encouraging soldiers to put dog collars on prisoners, or simply urinate on them, has little impact on the situation either.
