No victory after all

It seems that the Pakistani government's removal of Mukhtaran Bibi / Mukhtar Mai's name from the Exit Control List was all a clever smokescreen. While her name has been removed from the list, her passport has quietly been seized. The official excuse is that she has to stay in Pakistan until the rape case has been resolved by the Supreme Court, but the aim is clearly to prevent her from tarnishing Pakistan's image by publicising her case abroad. She is also still being prevented from meeting or communicating with her lawyer. So it looks like the Pakistani authorities have simply found a slightly subtler means of oppression.

Kudos to Onlooker who is keeping me up to date on this stuff, BTW.
