Refugees and the presumption of innocence

Yesterday during question time, Tony Ryall attacked the Refugee Status Appeals Authority for granting refugee status to a person currently facing charges for threatening to kill, and asked whether someone facing such charges could be granted refugee status. There's a long answer and a short answer to this. The long answer is that given by the Minister - that the Refugee Convention allows us to refuse refugee status to people who have committed serious crimes (including war crimes) outside New Zealand, and that it also allowed refugees to be deported if they were a danger to the host community (in other words, we don't have to accept murderers, and we can deport them). The short answer is four simple words: "innocent until proven guilty". Does the National Party not believe in that anymore?
