If you're reading this from a university, and wondering where all the staff are, they're on strike today. If you don't like this, then maybe you should contact your VC and ask them to give their staff a pay rise.
Unless you're at Otago, where it's all systems go, as the staff have been (at least temporarily) bought off with a 5% pay increase and a vague statement from the Vice Chancellor to the effect he wouldn't mind a multi-employer collective agreement, subject to conditions which can never be met.
They've more or less said that they'll solve the student loan problem by cutting funding to student loans, so that instead of running up a huge loan, you won't be able to go to university all.
Back to the days when a higher education was for "mainstream" people whose parents could afford to pay - not those scummy poor people Labour let go to uni.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if John Key and Don Brash would call pay rises for University staff "waste" and hold University funding to 2005 levels...
