Having dug himself a hole with his utterly chauvinistic post-debate comments, Don Brash is keeping on digging, responding to a redneck voter that "one thing that I am not is a feminist", and then desperately backpedling when queried on this by the media:
Asked afterwards to explain what that meant, Dr Brash said he did not mean to suggest he did not support women's rights."A feminist is someone to me who is by definition a woman. Can you have men feminists? I'm strongly in favour of women's rights, strongly.
"I have to admit I didn't see the need for women's rights through my [first] wife, but I saw them through my daughter. And I want women to have every single right that anyone else in the community has, that guys have.
"When I first got married I didn't understand what women were on about, with demanding equal rights. I thought they had equal rights.
"It wasn't until I saw the world through my daughter's eyes that I realised the world was not equal and there were lots of things which were not fair to women. I think I understand that very clearly."
Not clearly enough, judging by his comments on Monday night and the number of women he has fired.
Poor old Don, the dear boy needs a cup of tea and a lie down.

ReplyDeleteInteresting that DB never saw the need for women's rights when it came to his wife. That must have been quite a while ago, like way back before equal pay for instance? A mistake anyone could have made, obviously. Of course, now that he's traded that wife in on a trophy version and not-seeing-the-need-for women's-rights has become an electoral liability, his views are different. Let no-one accuse him of putting ideology above pragmatism!

ReplyDeletemost people probably dont count themselves as a feminists in as far as the term applies some sort of exclusive prejudice rather like other social "ists" like racist and sexist and so forth.
I dont see for example expecting another sex or face to be treatd the same as everyone else to be an "ist like "feminist"
He probably thought women were best at home back when he was a socialist. Guess he grew up.
