The Herald goes premium

The Herald has gone premium and walled off its local opinion content for paying subscribers only. Which I guess means no more links to or discussion of that content. While I could easily buy a hardcopy of the Herald locally, there's just no point in posting about stories unless other people can read them.

  1. You could get a subscription, get some server space, use a bit of PHP/MySQL wizardry, and good ol' copy and paste, and the problem is solved...

  2. Millsy: I think that would be more likely to get said site closed down for copyright infringement.

Of course, if some publicly minded person pays for a subscription and posts the account details, we're all happy. But I suspect that would violate their TOS.

  3. Who is gonna pay $1,000 a year to read the collection of bigotry and ignorance that passes for comment in the NZ Herald?

I think some of the columnists self-publish, anyway - Brian Easton has a site, but I can't see his Herald articles.

  4. Did anyone else spot the rich irony in not being able to view sideswipe or a Garth George because it's "premium" content? Oh how I laughed. And then I deleted NZ Herald from my bookmarks.

  5. Rich: it's only $100. But it's still grossly overpriced for the limited content it allows access to. You almost wonder whether they've set it high just so they can make the case in a few months that it has cost them advertising revenue...

  6. Oh I thought it was $3 a day full stop.

It's still much too much for information with negligible commercial value - the FT is a must read amongst finance profession but still struggles at around $200.

  7. You can still view the columnists latest columns you just need to search for them by name via the Herald search box. Also I think the links will still hold as they did not want to stop bloggers linking to them.

Either which way it is a stupid and brainless system.
