Remember the old joke site a few elections ago about how Winston Peters was a Nazi? Well, it seems our local Nazi-wannabes - the New Zealand National Front - agree. They've endorsed both New Zealand First and the newly formed Direct Democracy Party in the election.
Needless to say, I think this is an excellent reason not to vote for either party.
Update: More here.
I really like this cartoon:

ReplyDeleteIn Germany there is a consitutional ban on referenda because they were abused by Hitler in the 1930's.
ReplyDeleteI guess we'd better hope Nazis don't like chocolate, then.
ReplyDeleteKyle Chapman is the Christchurch East candidate for Direct Democracy. Hence the endorsement by the National Front.
ReplyDeleteMikaere
In addition, Anton Foljambe (Former NF head, former NF national secretary) is also standing for the DDP in Christchurch.
ReplyDeleteRich,
ReplyDeleteyour comment about referenda being banned in Germany is not accurate. At federal level, there can, or rather must, be a referendum held to redraw the boundaries of the states (Bundesländer) in a so-called "Neugliederung", but not for anything else. This has only happened once so far (1952).
However, at both state level and at local level, referenda can be held for pretty much anything the relevant government sees fit. So, for example, Schleswig-Holstein had a referendum in 1998 to decide on whether or not it would sign up to the orthographical reform. Hope that clarifies matters.
