Biggest hurricane ever

After Arlene, Cindy, Dennis, Katrina, Ophelia, Rita, and Tammy, the US is now about to face another hurricane: Wilma. And it's now officially the strongest hurricane on record, in a season which is tied with 1933 as the most intense ever. It's so intense they've run out of letters - and there's still a month to go.

Of course, this has no connection to global warming. None whatsoever.

  1. Actually, you're right. It ISN'T related to global warming at all. Those who do research beyond the media hysteria and dare to swim upstream find the evidence they find contrary to the global warming position hard to square away in a global warming framework.

    Get ready to snigger.

There exists prima facie data that the -for this time of year- natural occurence of huricanes in that part of the world are being amplified by means of technology.

I know, I know... but you read it here first (I assume), and if you hang around long enough, I'll get to tell you I told you so one day.

In the mean time, hide behind your rational global warming.

  2. Hmmm, anthropogenic global warming = rational, technology to speed up hurricanes = not rational?

You're getting a high standard of trolls these days, I/S. Wonderful how pumping heat into the sea by means of a few billion engines is considered to not be technology...

  3. Actually, I think its a beautiful pisstake of how loony the deniers will get. I'm almost expecting to see it crop up in the sewer - along with a rant laying the blame at the feet of lefties and liberals, of course.

  4. I assumed that it was a reference to chemtrails and government weather modification programmes - something which is being discussed and investigated more and more in the US and Europe.

That said, I don't quite understand why anyone would argue that the US government is secretly and deliberately amplifying hurricanes which will hit the US.

So there we go, I shall risk feeding a troll :)

  9. Haha your all clasic!

anyway just to nitpick - strongest doesnt equal bggest and by ever we mean recorded history AND damage depends on where it hits of course.

Global warming probably does increase the number of hurricanes but the same research seems to indicate it doesnt increase their strength. (maybe wilma will help to push the evidence in favour of it increasing strength also).

Anyway My solution is a huge Pool cover over the carabean (just a few days at the start of the season should do it) - who's with me??

  10. So why did 1933 have so many hurricances?

Since recorded weather history is relatively short it's hard to say if in other periods of history where the earth was warmer or cooler naturally does this affect hurricane size and strength.

As all other evidence is based on relatively a small amount of data, it's hard to say for certain one way or another.

I remember a few years ago they were looking at the high number of lightning strikes in the upper atmosphere was a major cause in the formation of hurricances.

  11. A hurricane is basically a tropical storm that gets super-charged early on by jet-streams sucking the air out from the top. Once started they're basically a giant heat-pump and die out over cold water.

The processes that lead to their formation are probably random and hard to link to global warming, but warmer seas = more energy to drive storms once they form.
