The Marriage (Gender Clarification) Amendment Bill isn't the only piece of bad legislation back on the order paper: yesterday, the government introduced new anti-party hopping legislation in the form of the Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill. The chief difference between this and the (now expired) Electoral Integrity Act is that there is no sunset clause - meaning that parties will be able to stifle internal dissent forever.
When the original legislation was passed, National, ACT, United Future and the Greens all voted against it. If they do so again, then the decision will effectively be in the hands of the Maori Party. I'll be watching Scoop for some indication of where they stand and whether they will be helping Winston to keep his MPs in line...
Maybe all those "married persons" who are found to have trashed their vows by practising the age old ritual of adultery could be rounded up as "the usual suspects" and held for sedition against the highly respected institution of "marriage". That should bring about a bit of hush on the matter.
ReplyDeleteOh I dunno, I'm sure there are a few jilted spouses who would adore the idea of their straying wife/husband being had up for adultery.
