The inquiry into historic abuse of Army cadets at Waiouru has officially reported back, and been passed on to the Crown Law Office. This is a good sign, as it suggests some chance that prosecutions will result.
Contrary to the claims of apologists for sadism like Garth George, this is not about judging the past by the standards of the present. It is about uncovering and punishing behaviour which was clearly illegal at the time. Behaviour like assault, sexual abuse, and rape. While it may no longer be possible to pursue criminal prosecution for these offences - there may be legal limits, witnesses may no longer be available - I'm happy that they are at least making the effort.
