The ACLU is telling it like it is on Bush's illegal domestic wiretapping program. Last Thursday, they ran the following ad in the New York Times.
Today, they followed it up with this one:

They're right: this is not about partisanship or pushing a political agenda - it is about the rule of law, and whether the President and the government are above the law or subject to it. And in a democracy, where there are checks and balances and where the government is politically accountable to the people, there can only be one answer to that question.
If you are American, you can send a letter to your Congressperson and Senator here.
"Congressperson", oi vey, so clunky. "Member of congress" would sound bettr, but please don't try to de-gender lanuage in such a painful way.
ReplyDeleteYou'll be saying "womyn" next. Shudder...
But it is "about partisanship or pushing a political agenda", maybe it shouldn't be - but it is.
ReplyDeleteAnyway if you are going to impeach someone it would probably be a good idea to be sure you had pretty good support for impeachment. Not that Bush is not pretty low now but not quite to Nixon levels.
Muerk: well, it's better than "Congresscritter", which is the US usage.
ReplyDeleteGenius: There may not be support for impeachment (that would be a long way down the track in any case), but there may be enough decent Republicans outraged by this to support Congressional hearings or possibly a Special Prosecutor to discover exactly what the President did and whether it was within the bounds of the law. And that in itself will help restore some accountability to the US political process. Bush seems to think that he is allowed to do anything; it's up to Congress to show that he is not.
