The police report into the allegations against David Benson-Pope and the report into allegations of abuse at the Army's cadet school in Waiouru are both due to be released today. They should make interesting reading. It will be particularly interesting to see whether prosecutions are recommended in the later case, or whether sadists and abusers will be allowed to get away with their crimes...

One thing that has puzzled me about the Cadet School abuse affair, and the shooting of that cadet in 1981, is that how the cadets had such a disregard for safety around firearms, and how they were allowed to bring guns armed with live ammo into the barracks...

The rifles were issued to the cadets and normally kept in a armskote in the barracks, the ammunition was stolen from the range and the cadet who had it lied when asked if he had any.
