Today's the day most of the country heads back to work, including the public servants, politicians, and serious journalists, so hopefully it will mean there'll be more substantive news. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much for today. In the meantime, though, Frogblog is back, with a post about the annual Japanese whale slaughter in the Southern Ocean. Scoop also has some photos and commentary from the Greenpeace blog on the prolonged suffering experienced by the whales after they've been harpooned. There's no question that what the Japanese are doing is both cruel and serves no useful scientific purpose - except possibly for "researching" the amount of money the Japanese public are willing to pay for whale meat.
Both I See Red and Just Left have said they'll be back on the 9th, so hopefully we'll see some stuff from them in the next few days as well.
yes it definitely feels like that - waiting, waiting, waiting, for something domestic to post about that isn't actually personal. i've posted far more personal stuff in the last two weeks than i think i've posted most of 2005.
ReplyDeleteJordan did tell me last week that he would be blogging again this year, but possibly less than in the past.
I actually thought about posting about Earthsea - but its been too long since I read the books, and I'd be having to rely on other people's splutterings. Besides, someone has already commented this weekend that they find it freaky when I suddenly start being me on my blog, so I should spare people the cognitive dissonance.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear that Jordan will be back; it would have been a loss to the blogosphere if he'd decided to call it a day.
Earthsea? as in the Ursula Le Guin trilogy? If that's the case then I would like to humbly submit 1 vote in favour of you blogging on the topic.
ReplyDeleteWell, as in the TV miniseries version which TV2 screened half of last night. It's probably enough to say that a) its been disowned by Le Guin; and b) almost everyone in it is white.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that I'd pull my tattered copy of A Wizard of Earthsea off the shelf and read it before watching tonight's atrocity, but I've clearly been distracted by blogging.
i had such high hopes when i read that it was on, but having sat through the atrocious acting last night i'm not sure i can bring myself to do so again tonight. not surprised it has been disowned be Le Guin, i was wondering if she had been at all involved while i was watching it - i kept thinking "gosh, i really don't remember the books very well at all if this is what it was like, this is terrible!"
ReplyDeleteI only managed to watch the first five minutes. Atrocity is the word.
ReplyDeletephew - I'm glad I was completely unaware of it
ReplyDeletei suffered for you all - last night was no better. in fact it was considerably worse in terms of the plot. i'm not sure if the ending reflected the ending on paper but it was certainly atrocious - all mysterious lights, and revisiting earlier characters to see them smile in realisation. ARGH!
ReplyDeleteI was curious, so I re-read A Wizard of Earthsea last night. I'll do the Tombs of A'tuan today, assuming I can fit it in. I've been told that Tombs is about someone losing their faith, not strengthening it - but that sort of plot is probably as abhorrent to hollywood scriptwriters as one without a central villain, or one where some people are merely slightly irritating (and to whom the protagonist over-reacts), rather than utterly vile and treacherous.
