Watching the elections

Now the polls have closed in Canada, you can get live election results here or here.

Liberals have gone down which was expected. In the next few days/weeks look for Paul Martin to stand aside (nobody will stand in his way) and the Liberal party will start to clean house in order to try to address the issues of the Gomeire inquiry which was the issue at the heart of their defeat.

Big story of the night is the gains made by the NDP. This is their high water mark. With the Bloc they will hold the balance of power.

Of course while Harper and the Tories will form the next governmnet it is still a minority government and they are traditionally short lived. Look for a short honeymoon

The NDP will probably be a little disappointed only to win 29 ridings, when they might have been looking for 35+. In the 1980s (1988 I think) they won 42 ridings under Ed Broadbent's leadership (and the House of Commons was smaller then too).
