The devil's work

More evidence of how distorted the world-view of our local religious wackos is: according to Garnet Milne of Reformation Testimony, trying to ban smacking and prevent parents from beating their children is doing the devil's work. Meanwhile, actually beating children, that's perfectly OK...

These people should speak up more. Really, I can't think of anything more likely to make the average New Zealander support an end to smacking as a froth-mouthed religious fanatic screaming about how it's "god's will" that children be beaten. Destiny Church's "Nuremberg rally" helped assure public support for the Civil Union Act, and hopefully Mr Milne here will have just assured public support for the repeal of section 59.

  1. I'm afraid that's the tip of the iceberg. Below the metaphorical waterline there are fundamentalist spanking manuals, with such delightful titles as "Spank Me if You Love Me,""God, the Rod and Your Child's Bod," "Spanking: Why, When and How," and "Spanking: A Loving Discipline."

    Add this to their unseemly enthusiasm for Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ,"
    and one begins to see a pattern here...

  3. Some of the above texts refer to spanking rituals, rather akin to the thirteenth and fourteenth century Flagellant sects in Italy and Austria.

    Plus ca change...

  4. And now a squadron of low-flying conspiratorial UN black helicopters have just flown in, amidst clouds of purple prose...

  5. Tony Milne might be interested to know that Mr Garnet mentioned Tony's name on the radio this morning. He talked of an email sent by "the homosexual Labour candidate Tony Milne..." which by all accounts referred to how heterosexual parents beat their children (and by implication I suppose how homosexual parents don't).

    Can you enlighten us Tony because it drew a blank with me.

    And while I am against the repeal of s 59 (you can view my submission on Sir Humphrey's soon) this type of 'reasoning' is odd to say the least.

  6. Haha, these religious loonies use "homosexual" as an adjective in exactly the same way neo-nazis use "Jewish".

    All this stuff about "spank me if you love me" and "loving discipline" brings porn to mind rather than hitting children. I'm with Gooner on repealing S59, but these guys aren't exactly welcome allies. I/S is right about their effect on public opinion.

  7. Milt, I could not agree more.
    Why can't these sorry specimens
    find a nice dominatrix and
    private dungeon somewhere,
    instead of forcing their beliefs
    on non-consenting children?
