Niue power crisis

On Tuesday night, a fire destroyed Niue's electricity generator, leaving the island without power for its homes or (more importantly) its water system. While the New Zealand government is sending an engineer to repair some of the damage, and is looking at sending an emergency generator, Niue is looking at being without electricity and water for up to three weeks.

This simply isn't good enough. In case anyone has forgotten, these people are New Zealanders as well as Niueans. We simply would not tolerate any part of New Zealand being without power, water, and proper sanitation for three weeks, and we should not tolerate it in Niue either. The Niuean government is asking for our help, and we should give it to them - and as quickly as possible.

  1. Actually, we tolerate it on Great Barrier and down the bottom of the west coast.
