Mexican election too close to call

Voting in the Mexican elections closed an hour ago, and the preliminary result is too close to call. The last few polls showed left-wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador ahead by a couple of percent, but that's within the margin of error, so while he's probably ahead, its not certain. I guess it'll be another nail-biting wait for results to trickle in, to see if Latin America's red-tide goes all the way to the Texas border...

  1. I've been watching the results, and at 43.99% counted, its Calderon 38.05%, AMLO 35.79%. Calderon's percentage lead has been shrinking all night, but I don't think it will be enough for AMLO to get him.

Ah well, it was a clean election (a small miracle for Mexico), and democracy was the winner on the day...

  2. I may have spoken too soon. At 67.8% counted, Calderon's lead has shrunk to 1.12% and 303000 votes - and AMLO is clawing it back. The current trendlines suggest AMLO will make it - barely - but it will be recount territory.

  3. Looking like Calderon has taken it, but by a very close margin. With 95.9% counted Calderon leads over Obrador, 36.46% to 35.41%.

    Whew!!

But I think you're right, there will most likely be a recount, both candidates are claiming victory. Let's just hope it stays peaceful, on BBC just now I see an Obrador supporter threatening they will take to the streets if denied victory...
