The Greater Wellington Regional Council is proposing a 50 - 60 MW wind farm at Stoney Creek, near Martinborough. This is right next door to Genesis's Hau Nui wind farm. It's still in the planning stage - the next step is to choose a company to run it, and do some studies to confirm the wind resource - but if all goes well, it could be generating electricity within 3 years.
Looking at the New Zealand Wind Energy Association's projects page, it looks like we will have a gigawatt of wind generation within a few years. Several of the larger proposals are waiting on the Environment Court to issue a final decision, but mostly we're just waiting for them to be constructed. Which puts us well on the way to a more sustainable future.
