Wayne Mapp's Employment Relations (Probationary Employment) Amendment Bill is slowly working its way through the select committee process, and meanwhile opposition is growing. The EPMU's 90-day notice period for action against the bill expires tomorrow, and the pan-union Work Rights, our right! campaign is marking the date by holding a rally outside Parliament, starting at 12:30. If you oppose the return of workplace feudalism and employers having absolute and arbitrary power over their workers, then show up and let the politicians know about it.
Just wondering, do you think this bill would be less "evil" if it was restricted to only apply to your first job?
ReplyDeleteI can't answer for Idiot/Savant, but I don't. Why should people be treated differently just because it's their first job? I imagine that having only an 89 (or less) day job on your CV would be worse than having nothing at all - who would give you a go knowing that your first employer got rid of you so fast?

Probationary employment periods are a sensible, mainstream concept. Australia has them, the UK has them (12 mths). I've lived in both countries (in addition to NZ) and it's an accepted part of modern life, hardly "feudal".

M'lud, in Saudi Arabia ... well all sorts of feudal crap is an accepted part of modern life. The two things are not mutually exclusive.
ReplyDeleteNor for that matter is everything fuedal automatically wrong, but that's another story.
Sacking without cause? I just can't see the benefit, other than to the ego of incompetent employers.
