Ashamed

Another one of those "ashamed to be a New Zealander" moments, with another racist attack in Wellington over the weekend. In Christchurch a few years ago, similar attacks resulted in a march for tolerance to show that the community opposed racist violence. If someone wants to organise a similar march in Wellington, then please let me know.

And while I'm at it, what is it with the Dominion-Post getting Pansy Wong's name wrong? This is the second or third time I've noticed it in the last few weeks.

Um, that's what happens when you expect fewer sub-editors to do more in the same of cost control? Just a theory...

And in Auckland too:

One myth perpetuated by apologists for racism is that it will just go away if minorities assimilate, don't stand out or speak out, and become "Kiwis", whatever that means. But the victim in Wellington was New Zealand-born, and did nothing whatsoever to provoke the attack, and the immigrant women in Auckland were likewise minding their own business, guilty of nothing more than not looking like their attackers.

Racism is always the responsibility of the perpetrators, not the victims. Yes, that should be stating the obvious, but sadly there are many bigots out there with a fondness for red herrings. And too many more who remain silent.

Anon: Jesus. Shooting at people at bus stops, apparently because of their religion or the colour of their skin? That's truly vile.
