Waiting...

Sometime later tonight NZ time, Tony Blair will formally announce his resignation as leader of the UK Labour Party. He won't be leaving Downing Street immediately - he will stay on as "caretaker" while the party has a leadership election - but he will be on the road and there will be no turning back. And I for one will be celebrating his departure. Any good he did has been utterly poisoned by Iraq, hs "legacy" buried under the corpses of 655,000 dead Iraqis. He deserves to end up in a cell in The Hague for what he has done. Sadly, he'll probably escape justice and die of old age in comfort, convinced to his dying day that his crimes were justified.

    Maybe he could be a cellmate with mugabe, castro and kim jong-il. When can we expect similar vein popping posts about them?

    Anon, maybe when you start writing them. If you don't like what's on the menu start your own restaurant.

  3. Good riddance, and not before time.

    Anon, heard of a search function? There's a little box in the top right, try putting "mugabe" in there.

  4. I do agree with the first part of anon's comment, though - Blair and Bush and Cheney could share a cell with Mugabe and Kim and Castro and a number of others too. The more the better.

  5. Domestically, he did a great job in education and in health but that's not what he'll be remembered for - because he made such a very big deal himself over his "liberal foreign interventionism" - so he wants us to judge him on his foreign achievements.

    His liberal interventionism for me will be remembered best as he sat on holiday while the by-far most open, pluralistic Arabic speaking state, Lebanon, was pulverised into the dust against all international law and he said and did nothing. He didn't lift a finger to defend the only state approaching a democracy in the Middle East.

    The second most democratic Arab state is the Palestine Authority - be led the European Union boycott of its democratically elected Unity Government (which includes three progressive social democratic independents) and led the way to impose economic sanctions on its poor poor people because 40% of them voted "the wrong way".

    But he was always happy in the company of the worst murdering tyrants - be they from Saudi Arabia, Egypt or Jordan: He never once actually acted meaningfully
    to promote the democrats in the jails of those racist states - preferring to protect UK-based arms exporters to the democrat-killers. Arms as a ratio of GDP and exports rose the most under his leadersihp - overwhelmingly to the worst tyrants on the planet: In Arabian Gulf and Africa and in Asia.

    ...his legacy in Iraq: The destruction of its Christian and other minorities, and the significant strengthening of extreme right-wing extremist al-Qaedaism;

    Jail is far too good for him. Send him to the House of Lords.
