Last week we learned that Telecom CEO Paul Reynolds was paid over $5 million, supposedly for "a job well done". Meanwhile, while management gets rich, Telecom is screwing over its workers. Currently it is attempting to contract out the jobs of its line engineers, sacking them all so they can sign up with a new company as "independent contractors" with no employment rights, no fixed hours, and for less than half of what they were previously paid. It's a perfect example of how big business enhances its profits by ripping off its employees.
But there's a flaw in Telecom's campaign: the engineers have to go along with it. If they don't, then the new company won't be able to fulfil its contract, people's phones won't get fixed, and Telecom will have to rehire the people it has just sacked. The EPMU is organising resistance so that this happens, but its not easy. Hunger and fear are on Telecom's side. The workers will only win if the rest of us back them as well.
The EPMU is asking for donations to help these workers out. If you'd like to help, then the easiest way is by calling 0900 STAND TALL (0900 78263) to make a $10 donation. Alternatively, you can donate directly to their bank account - details by following the link above.
Public support has helped workers beat rapacious corporations before, and with your help, they can do it again.
