The Stop the Search and Surveillance Bill is holding a public debate on the government's Search and Surveillance Bill, which is currently before the justice and electoral select committee. The bill expands search powers not just for the police, but all other government agencies (from immigration to animal welfare inspectors), while reducing oversight. It has caused significant concern to civil libertarians.
Invited speakers at the debate include Warren Young of the Law Commission (which drafted the bill), and Michael Bott from the New Zealand Council for Civil Liberties.
