Making the poor pay for the earthquake

The argument over whether to pay for earthquake reconstruction through a disaster levy, EQC premium rises, or some other method is really an argument about who will pay for this disaster. Today, Finance Minister Bill English gave his take, by hinting that he would cut interest-free student loans and Working For Families. These aren't just policies National has been wanting to get rid of for some time - they're also cuts that will impact entirely on poor and middle-class New Zealanders, while having no effect on the wealthy whatsoever. So, Bill English's answer to "who shall pay" is "certainly not me, and certainly not my rich mates".

What a wanker.
