Compare and contrast: celebrity justice edition

Man gets community work after indecent assault of girl, Stuff, 4 February 2008:

A Stokes Valley man has been sentenced to 150 hours community work and 15 months intensive supervision, for performing an indecent act on a six-year-old girl.

Alex Atack, 21, was sentenced at Wellington District Court today by Judge Mike Behrens, after earlier pleading guilty.

Judge Behrens said he took into account that the only reason the offending had come to light was because Atack had gone voluntarily to Lower Hutt police station to tell them what he had done.

Comedian discharged over sex act on daughter, Stuff, 2 September 2011:

A well-known comedian and entertainer who performed a sex act on his four-year-old daughter has been discharged without conviction despite pleading guilty.

[...]

The judge said today the effects of a conviction "outweighed the gravity of the offending" and awarded a discharge without conviction.

[...]

"He's a talented New Zealander. He makes people laugh and laughter's a good medicine that we all need a lot of."

So, if you're famous and "make people laugh", you get a discharge without conviction. If you're not, you don't. Celebrity justice in action.
