When former US President Donald Trump was charged back in April with falsifying business records, many people expressed disappointment that he hadn't yet been charged with his real crime of attempting to overturn an election by force. Now, that's finally happened:
Former President Trump has been indicted on four counts following a special counsel investigation into efforts to stop the transfer of power after his 2020 election loss and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.Good. This is an essential part of holding the Trump regime accountable, and an essential part of the US's democratic correction. A country that wishes to remain democratic cannot just let a politician attempt to overthrow an election! And hopefully it will result in both Trump being convicted, jailed, and barred from office, and in other Republicans being deterred from following in his footsteps. The charges are conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, conspiracy against rights and obstruction or attempting to obstruct an official proceeding. The indictment alleges that Trump pursued discounting legitimate votes and subverting the 2020 presidential election results through three criminal conspiracies.
