Via DPF: Former Python John Cleese didn't like Palmerston North very much, saying
"If you wish to kill yourself but lack the courage to, I think a visit to Palmerston North will do the trick."
The Mayor is outraged, but I think she should just face facts: Palmerston's biggest "drawcard" is that it's "a great place to raise kids". If that phrase doesn't scream "dull, boring, and insipid", then I don't know what does.
This is just Cleese's way of ensuring that he gets a really, really good motel at the next few dozen provincial towns he tours to.
ReplyDeleteI lived there 10 years - I agree with JC.
ReplyDelete"parochial morons ... and drunk ... students" also captures Dunedin quite nicely.
ReplyDeleteDunedin! Not as cold as Invercargill!
Dunedin! Not as windy as Wellington!

ReplyDelete"Palmerston North. Always playing second fiddle to a nice little town between Waikouaiti and Hampden best known for the local bakery's revolting greasy mutton pies."
- Dave J.
You lot would start all this right when I'm about to move back there. Don't forget, from this distance the rest of NZ looks like a boring wasteland of parochial drunkards too.
