It's a Dunne deal

The Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill now looks set to pass its first reading - thanks to United Future. We can only hope they change their mind during the select committee phase.

  1. Depends. What happens if Peter Brown tries to move the Death With Dignity Bill through Parliament
this term again? And what would happen if Gordon Copeland couldn't
    stop it...?

  2. We get a euthanasia law, I imagine. And I think the numbers are probably there for it.

Though Georgina Beyer's plan to keep her transgender equality bill on the ballot will restrict the scope for other private member's bills...

(Yes, United Future could throw a sulk and try and bring down the government. But then I think the Greens would probably step in and make political capital out of their unreliability...)

  3. Yes, but would a euthanasia law
reform bill be feasible if the
NZMA still opposes it, and unlike
the BMA, it shows no sign of
    relenting over the issue?

Given what I've read about the
    Oregon assisted suicide bill,
    reform only happens if the
    medical community is split over
the issue, as it was there.

  4. Then it might not happen. But then there wouldn't be a "problem" with Gordon Copeland being unable to stop it.

(Sorry, I thought you were asking what would happen if one managed to pass, not whether it would)
