Scoop has spawned another site: ScoopIt. It seems to be a giant news aggregator and discussion system, with users submitting stories and the contents of the front-page being decided by community voting rather than an editor (you vote by clicking on the number, BTW - something which wasn't immediately obvious). So, another attempt to disintermediate the media.
The buttons you're now seeing at the end of my posts allow registered users to click through and submit stories. If you want to get your own, details are here. Note that the blogger details are for classic templates; if you are using a new template you will need to expand your widgets, dig round in the scary code for the 'post-comment-link' or 'post-backlink-link' (depending on which you have and where you want it), and paste this in somewhere:
<a expr:href='"http://www.scoopit.co.nz/submit.php?url=" + data:post.url'><IMG ALT='ScoopIt!' SRC='http://www.scoopit.co.nz/img/vote/button_over.gif' /></a>
Note that this uses their picture; its more polite to host it yourself, but OTOH they'd normally be serving it via JavaScript, so I'm sure they can handle it.
Depending on taste you might want to use this as the image:

The one you're using was intended for the rollover.
Possibly somebody needs to work out conditional code so you get something like your version on the front page and the javascript on in the story pages. But I'm just musing aloud. Apparently someone who know what they're doing will be on to this soon.
So basically scoop have ripped off reddit.com. Wow.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I just tried to get my head around this and failed. Going to have to wait until the kind people at ScoopIt explain it for beta methinks.
ReplyDeleteHere's an article about ScoopIt by Juha.
