East Timor is going to the polls today in the first Presidential and Parliamentary elections since independence in 2002. Despite some violence in the run-up to the poll, the elections appear to be going peacefully, and the people are keen to vote. The real question is whether they will be free and fair, or whether the fears of the opposition that the poll will be manipulated by the incumbent government will be realised. We'll just have to wait and see what the international observers say.
Results are due out in a day or two. If anyone can find a website tracking them, please let me know in the comments.
