The first flip-flop

Well, that didn't take long. Having spent the last three years deriding Labour's innovation of giving support parties ministerial positions outside Cabinet, National looks set to replicate it, promising ACT leader Rodney Hide a position as a Minister outside Cabinet in exchange for his party's support on confidence and supply. It's a perfect example of National's FPP-era thinking: things which are bad, "bizarre" and "precarious" when you're in opposition suddenly become an excellent idea when you're on the government benches, not because you've changed your mind, but because you've changed where you sit. As for the public, we're just supposed to forget their previous position, as if it had never happened. National has always favoured flexible coalition arrangements. And Oceania has always been at war with East Asia.
