Equality loses in New York

After months of delay, New York's same-sex marriage bill finally made it to the floor of the state senate last night - and was voted down 38 to 24. Which means that New York won't be becoming the 6th state to recognise equal marriage rights any time soon. It is a shameful, shameful vote, akin to voting against interracial marriage - but I guess this is what you get in the USA, a nation of religious bigots.

The positive side is that the bill still has massive support in the House, and with a state election next year, there's a chance to alter the balance a bit. But with that sort of majority, it looks like it will take a long time for equality to come to New York.
