The Official Information Act 1982 has two birthdays. The first is December 17 1982, when it received the Royal assent and became law. But there's also its commencement date: 1 July 1983. Which means that today is (one view) its 30th birthday.
I have nothing really to add to what I said about the act 5 years ago when it turned 25. But if you'd like to mark the day, the best way to do so is by requesting something, ideally something someone in power doesn't want you to know. And if you're not sure how to do it, just go to FYI, pick a target, and fill out the form.
(Topical targets: IANZ. Parliamentary Services (yes, I know, but they answer anyway). John Key. The GCSB. Something you want to know? Just ask, and they have to answer...)
