No Powerpoint in the House

Earlier this year, Parliament was wired to allow MPs to use laptops while in the debating chamber. Unfortunately, according to the rules for "use of laptops and mobile devices in the Chamber" I acquired today, they won't actually be able to use them for anything useful or fun. Among the rules:

  • [Laptops] are only to be used for work-related activities
  • they must not be used for games or other amusements
  • they must not be used to take still or video images of the proceedings
  • they must not be used to make audio recordings of the proceedings of the House
  • they must not be used to broadcast still images, video images or audio of the proceedings of the House
  • they must not be used for the purposes of demonstration and display.

So, no PXTs of the Minister of Fourty Winks having another nap, no audio of the delightful catcalls across the Chamber, and most importantly, no use of Powerpoint.

Well, at least they've got something right...

But the parties can have a backroom team of helpers sending suggestions and so forth to their MPs by Messenger or whatever?

I believe so.

Really, email would be much quicker.

(I meant MSN messenger not a person running around).

I suspect that one or all of the parties will soon have some sort of rapid rebuttal system (like Excalibur) for use during ministers questions and the like - but in realtime - UK Labour's was more about creating briefing papers or maybe a pager message.

Rich: There's a few rules I left out:

* they must not be used until after question time has concluded
* a member may not use his/her computer when a member on either side of the member has the call

MPs can still use their own laptops when they have the call to speak in debate.

What would hansard do with things like that? Especialy animations.

This must have come up before with other visual aids, do they say "winston waved a giant cardboard cheque about"

I must admit I'm fairly ignorant of this sort of stuff.
