Washington DC has issued its first same-sex marriage licences, with the usual happy scenes of couples queuing to do their paperwork (and get in quick in case the law is overturned). One couple compared it to christmas morning. Take that, bigots!
Meanwhile, the state of Maryland, which is right nextdoor, has announced that it will recognise same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. So couples there will be able to sidestep their state's ban simply by crossing the border for a ceremony. Its not as good as state legislation - but given the proximity, its almost as good, and the resulting normalisation of same-sex marriage will help overturn the ban in the long run.
