Over on FrogBlog, Keith Locke decries the High Court decision that police were misapplying firearms law in attempting to ban "sporting configuration" guns. He shouldn't be. A fundamental principle is at stake here: whether laws are made by our democratically elected Parliament or by our unelected and unaccountable police force. And on that question, any democrat, liberal, or supporter of the rule of law should be on the side of Parliament. The police's role is to enforce the laws, not make them. Letting them just make it up as they go along is an invitation to arbitrary tyranny.
(Meanwhile, Police Association President Greg O'Connor demands more respect for police officers. Perhaps if they didn't engage in the sort of behaviour described above...?)
