Via Hard News: Former Christian Heritage Party leader Graham Capill today plead guilty to charges of sexually assaulting a young girl. I guess that shows the quality of "moral leadership" exercised by our local fundamentalist Christians.

Weren't the Nats ready to do a deal with Capill when he ran the CHP?
How did this guy get to be a police prosecutor?
Congratulations to the boxer guy for a well-delivered shot. I understand it broke Capill's jaw. I hope Capill gets a long prison sentence for this, with no leave to apply for home detention.

While I don't like what Capill did, he does not deserve to be assaulted for it, and the person who did so should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
In our society, the law should provide punishment for crimes - not private individuals.

According to the Dom Post today, ten years imprisonment is the maximum penalty for such an offense.
Given the fact that he was a repeat offender, one hopes that he receives the full penalty of law for his actions, and isn't
mollycoddled because he was a morals campaigner.

Or a prosecutor.
But I think the level of public scrutiny in this case should ensure that the sentence is in line with those handed out for similar offending.

Given that he'll pull some sleazy deal with our increasingly corrupt court system, I'm glad that the vile Capill creature got at least some proper justice meted out to him. If I ever met the guy who landed those punches on the snivelling cockroach, I'd buy him several drinks.
I'm normally a compassionate guy. But all that stops when it comes to any kind of politician. And if the politician in question is a sanctimonious 'Born Again' type then I'm even less inclined to show any pity.
Had the Capill creature ever taken some kind of public office, then his level of mercy would have been very thin indeed. I only wish he could be judged and sentenced according to his own statements and values, the kind that he has smeared the media with over the last ten years or so.
Enjoy prison Graham! And mind how you go in the shower block......

Id just like to point out that capill was neve a politician - he was a leader of a pressure group. He was never an MP. He was just a wannabe MP and it took 10 years for him to find out he was never going to be an MP.

Well, it wasn't his day job, but given the number of elections he contested (and the showing of his party), I don't think the "politician" label is a misnomer.

you can always get a few votes from the people who dont pay any attention when they vote I mean we have the migillicuddy serious party after all.
That and there is always a couple of percent of the population that is totaly moronic and uninformed on any particular issue.

Genius: Um, people voted for the McGillicuddies deliberately. Very deliberately. It was a way of telling our politicians "you all suck so much that we'll vote for a bunch of total loonies rather than you".
Their demise was a sad loss to the NZ political system - but OTOH, I understand that they were a little worried about cracking the 5% threshold and actually getting someone in Parliament (which would have taken all the fun out of it).
The CHP, OTOH, was a serious party, in that they had every intention of implementing their theocratic plans if elected. Fortunately, they never were (though they did come close in 1996).

I don't. Surely the whole point is that we are not like him.

True. Well said. I'm just still all fired up at the sight of him getting what was coming to him. I'll have a large whisky and resolve to be more civilised.
He's still a TWAT though.........

I'd be suprised if he got a big jail term given these conditions:
- displays of remorse
- first offence
- he pled guilty
- family support to stop his reoffending
Although his standing as a bastion of 'virtue' may go against him.
Personally I'm disgusted with him, unlike many pedophiles he was aware and accepting that adult/child sexual acts are wrong. He certainly has said so in the past.
It won't be the jail or community service that will be his punishment, it will be the contempt and revoltion that he will forever inspire from those he meets.

good call muerk, regarding his real punishment

I'm another person confused by this sentiment. Why does everybody seem to be so irrational around the issue of paedophilia?
I don't have any children so I guess it's hard for me to comment, but at the end of the day I would much rather a loved one was sexually abused than murdered.
"Personally I'm disgusted with him, unlike many pedophiles he was aware and accepting that adult/child sexual acts are wrong. He certainly has said so in the past."
I'm pretty sure most paedophiles know what they're doing is wrong. I think it's a bit like smoking cigarettes or getting burnt in the sun - people do it anyway and (in this case) hope they won't get caught.

Nope, most pedophiles don't see their behavior as abusive, but as loving. Or they are in some kind of utter denial about it ever happening.
Read up at Nambla'a website, it's... an eye opener.
