Short quits Labour

Former UK Development Secretary and opponent of the Iraq war Clare Short has finally quit the Labour Party to become an independent. It's a good move - its clear that she had no future in Labour given her opposition to Blairite warmongering and vocal support for electoral reform - but at the same time you have to ask: why didn't she jump earlier?

Her resignation letter is here [DOC].

An absolute disgrace. Check out her 2005 election leaflet here. I would be outraged if I had voted for her at the last election.

Yeah, Short is a grandstander of the highest order. Just about the *only* credible thing she has done was oppose the Iraq war (after being persuaded to support it in the first place!). Ask the aid agencies how much they admired her in her time as development minister and you will get some pretty telling responses.
