Dr Noel Ingram's inquiry into Taito Philip Field has been extended, and will now "take as long as it needs". Which is good - the allegations are serious, possibly criminal, and deserve a thorough investigation; I'm pleased to see the government giving them the time they need, rather than trying to rush through a sordid whitewash (as they initially seemed to be doing).

Now the focus is going to turn to Field's chances of being back in Cabinet when a government finally forms. I can't really see this happening, unless Labour wants to begin its third term on a very bad note. Which means Field will be consigned to the backbenches with the rest of his retrograde mates, where he belongs.
