I've had to remvoe the recent comments list, as it seemed to be causing things to hang. Since I don't have an extensive knowledge of javaScript, I haven't been able to work out exactly what the problem is yet; I'll look at it properly later this evening.

And its back. Not sure what was wrong, but it seems to work OK now.

All the blogspot.com sites have been slow in loading incl. comments today. I've no idea why.

Just a suggestion, but I often get Javascript errors from your site, and a few others, which look like they are caused by quote/apostrophe characters in subject titles that aren't being escaped properly.

Hmmm. I've also had complaints about the sheer amount of javascript (due mainly to the "recent comments" feature, and its contribution to page size (it essentially loads every comment onto the front page) - but its such an essential feature that I don't think the site really works anymore without it.
If only blogger would write a proper one, then I wouldn't have to kludge...

Would putting recent comments on a separate page be a viable option? That would speed loading for the causual reader, while retaining functionality for those who want to keep track of the comments. You could have a longer list of comments that way, too.

CMT: I don't think so; its far better to have a list where people can easily see it.
If anybody is a javascript guru, then I'm sure the blogosphere would welcome a version of the comments script that was less clunky (and didn't include every comment on the main page) - but thinking about it, I'm fairly certain its done to limit the number of searches and sorts...
