Familiar

Back in the Eleventh Century, there was a little spat between the Pope and various Kings and Emperors called the Investiture Controversy, over who got to appoint Bishops. It ended up with mutual depositions, excommunication, civil war in Germany, and the amusingly-named Concordat of Worms. Which makes all of this look more than a little familiar...

Unlike last time, though, I don't expect it to end with the Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party grovelling in the snow for three days outside Canossa in order to gain the Pope's forgiveness.
