Debating a constitution

Tim Selwyn has established a blog as an online constitutional convention to draft a republican constitution. It's an interesting experiment in online participatory democracy, and if it gets people talking and considering the issues, it is a Good Thing.

One interesting question is what will be done with the draft. Throw it out there for discussion, along with a "roadmap" document on how we can get there from here? Go for a citizens initiated referendum on the question of whether it should be adopted as supreme law (though forcing the issue in that manner may be counterproductive; I think many are happy for us to drift towards a republic, but not to make a clean break of it).

The site is here, and the first post (soliciting comments on how to manage the rest of the discussion and what issues need to be addressed) is here. Note that Tim wants all comments to be anonymous "to ensure that ideas rather than personalities are discussed".

I/S: Thanks for the plug! And thanks for mentioning the anonymous rule - I think it's important.

Some good suggestions so far.

At the moment the first agenda is being discussed which includes what should happen with the draft. On 1 September the new agenda with it's discussion points will be posted - to influence that put in your 2 cents worth.

In time I think the moderation could be rotated to other people. We'll see how it goes.
