Reds under the bed

Or on the ballot paper, in this case. Yes, the communists are standing for election - but only in two seats: Maungakiekie and Christchurch Central. It will be interesting to see how many votes they get...

Well, their total in the last elections was only 171 votes. I wouldn't expect them to do a whole lot better this time around, myself. (Their Christchurch Central candidate, Annalucia Vermunt, managed to get 395 votes in the last mayoral race, but that was across the whole city. I don't know about Patrick Brown in Maungakiekie).

With regard to New Zealand far-leftists, I suspect the Anti-Capitalist Alliance would actually be the more successful group - it got about 0.02% of the vote in 2002, as opposed to the Communist League's 0.01%. I don't suppose anyone knows if they're standing again?

Yeah, they'll be standing throughout the country I should imagine. I think they have at least 3 candidates within Wellington. I was talking to my flatmate who is standing for them in Wellington central and he's going to get around to the campaign some time soon.
