Cutting off your nose to spite your face

Outraged by Californians voting against same-sex marriage in 2008, a California man has started a campaign for a referendum to ban divorce, "to protect the sanctity of marriage".

Its a pointed comment on the hypocrisy of Christian marriage advocates, who seem driven more by homophobia than any consistent position on what marriage is or should be. But it is also cutting off your nose to spite your face. The aim is to get the motion on the ballot - but what happens if it succeeds? What happens if people vote for it? Yes, it would make the point about the Christian Taliban - but at the cost of undermining the very liberal views it is supposed to be promoting (not to mention making a lot of people extremely miserable, and probably precipitating a few murders). And that is simply not a sensible or moral course of action.
